Premium vs. regular gas 850 1996

I have recently bought a 96 850T to replace my 86 240DL wagon (which I drove the wheels off and miss very much).
The manual for the 850T says to use premium fuel, but then says 87 octane minimum. The back of that little flip-chart says regular gas.
Which do I believe?
Except for power difference, will I ruin things by running regular fuel instead of premium?
