Bad RPM sensor 850 1997

While traveling during the holidays we had a problem with our '97 T5 Wagon. The car bucked and stuttered and the check engine light came on. We took it to a Volvo dealership and they replaced the RPM sensor (on Chistmas Eve). Within in 50 miles of driving the symptoms returned. The engine cuts out and the RPMs drop 500-800. It will run if you floor it. We limped it to our local mechanic who's had it for two weeks. The codes continue to point to the RPM sensor, but he can't find the problem. He put in new plugs, wires, & dist cap. Fuel pressure is good. We're 4 hrs away from the nearest dealer so I've got to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated.
