My '96 850 with 62,000 miles suddenly wouldn't start after a short local drive. No cranking or noise at all. Dashboard lights came on, fuel gauge, temperature gauge registered, but car wouldn't start. Tried several times, locked & unlocked car--still no start. I was about to call tow service, gave it one more try, and was relieved to start up.
Took car in & was told the problem was the starter motor. Got the new starter motor. Next day I ran a quick errand. Car wouldn't start up again! Got it going & drove back to dealership. Then I was told the problem was a fuel pump relay. When I asked as to whether I really had needed a new starter motor, I was told that this part had "tested bad" & I indeed needed a new one as well as the new fuel pump relay So now I've had both parts replaced & I'm hoping the start problem is over. ...(.Afterrward Someone told me that if the car still did not crank with the new starter motor, it would not have been the relay). Since this was an intermittent problem, I have no idea if the correct diagnoses were made. Does this sound right? Do these parts typically need to be replaced about the same time?
