Starter Motor Repair 850

I removed my starter motor last weekend. It was making a high pitched screeching noise every once and awhile. Disconnected the battery after causing sparks when trying to disconnect the starter solinoid. Ooops! Disconnected the relays under the top of the radiator shrowd. Removed the top section of the radiator shrowd. Removed top intercooler hose right back to the throttle body. Removed the air intake hose to the air filter and the purge valve. I then removed the rest of the radiator shrowd.
Getting to the starter motor bolts was a little tricky. The lower bolt has a hose and a wire harness right in front of it. The starter then came out easy. Noticed right away that the starter was clean as a whistle. Too clean. There was a rusty look to the needle roller bearing at the drive end of the starter. I proceded to take the motor apart. Cleaned up the motor commutator and cleaned and lubed all the shafts bushings and bearings. Cleaned and greased the planitary gear in the motor. Threw everything back together and back into the car.
Crossed my fingers and started the car. It started! I've started it about 20 times since the weekend and no more screeching. We will see how long it lasts.

One thing I noticed while working on the starter. The motor appears to be a permanent magnet dc motor with a planetary gear instead of a dc motor with a series wound field directly driving the bendix assembly. Must partly explain the higher cost of a replacement starter. This starter must also be more efficient at starting the car than an equivalent series wound starter.
