Am I Screwed? S70 1998

As some of you may remember, my wife's '98 S70 N.A. with 90K miles has a cracked block. The leak turned out to be behind the inner plastic timing belt guard. In the process of trying to find the leak I needed to remove it. In order to do so I had to remove the tensioners/idlers, water pump and cam timing belt gears.
Now here is my concern. When I removed the cam timing belt gears I ASSumed that they were somehow indexed to the cams. Actually it looks like they are not indexed in any way. In fact it looks like the bolt holes are slotted.
Now I understand that on the opposite end of the camshafts there are slots and a tool can be used to align the cams. I would guess that once the cams are aligned from the opposite end then the cam gears can be attached, adjusted to the timing marks and tightened. But do I have to have the cover off the head to do this?

In short, here is the question. How can I get the cam timing gears attached to the cams and everything aligned so I can get the engine running with the least amount of trouble? Now the cams were initially aligned but in the process of removing the gears I may have shifted them slightly.

I want to get the car back together and running even with the crack. I may try to use some Bars Leak or Cargo Seal-it it to stop the leak.

I am having a hell of a lot of trouble finding a used motor I can afford. I can't find out for sure if the block from an 850 will work.
