No I did not. I was not able to get the info from Volvo and I did not want to spend $200 for the device from IPD for reverse engineering. I used the black tape solution for a while until I got a tool that does the reset.
Here is what I know. To reset the Service Light, you have to logout (or not connect) from the engine ECU. Instead you have to connect to the instrument cluster ECU. A Scan tool that connect to the ECU only (address $17), will not be able to reset the service light. You need a scan tool that is able to connect to the various ECU. On an 850 there is multiples device that are on the ISO-9141 bus (Engine, Instrument cluster, ABS, Transmission, Climate control and power seats).
About a year later, I talked to Alex Peper. He has a software and hardware combo that read and clear the OBD codes. I decided to get his package ($113 then) to check and reset a check engine light. I did ask him if he could included the "Clear Service Light" function. Few months later he added this feature to his package. I think he was able to get his hand on a Volvo scan tool to capture the codes to clear the service light. I think his software is able to reset the Service Light for 850 1996 and 1997 and also S70 1998.
I have been using this tool now for sometime and I have been happy with it. It does work for both cars (1997 855 GLT and 1998 BMW 528iA).
