Shock/strut life for S70 S70

Hi. Can anyone tell me how many miles or years I can expect from a set of
original factory shocks? Our 1998 S70 has nearly 55,000 miles on it, and
still has original shocks/struts. I drive it every once in a while, and I
swear it makes knocking sounds that could be from the shocks wearing out, or
maybe even the upper strut bearings. The sound is noticeable when I drive
over rough roads, potholes, etc. I remember my '89 VW GTI-16V ate strut
bearings, until I installed HD units.

I'd also appreciate any recommendations on new shocks/struts. Is factory
the best way to go? I'm asking because I put Bilsteins on my '94 4Runner,
and like them. Since the Volvo is my wife's car, I don't want to make it
ride like a logwagon.

Any info would be appreciated.
