850 tranny fluid and pnp/rpm switch 850 1995

I just had a pnp sensor replaced and the mechanic was going to replace the rpm sensor as well but did not have the part. Long story short when I arrived home there was a trail of tranny fluid in the street and a puddle on my driveway. What could the mechanic have done/forgotten to cause this? Or, is this probably unrelated and I'm in deep transmission trouble? I'm new to owning a volvo (1995 850 turbo) and could use some insight.
