Remote/Keyless entry

I have a 1995 Volvo 960 wagon. I need to replace our 2 remotes for unlocking the doors --- 1 lost & 1 dealer confirmed is a faulty unit (confirmed system in vehicle still works fine). Local dealer price = +$240 for two. Posts on this site over the last year indicate there may be less expensive, non-Volvo remotes which can be programmed instead. A local auto accessories shop tried & failed using a Viper remote. I also understand there is a specific frequency requirement which may be unique to each vehicle. Can anyone advise re: validity of using a non-Volvo remote (specific brand & other specs), how to ensure correct frequency match, and alternatively a likely source for the lowest price new Volvo remote units.

Appreciatively,

Scott S.
