Can software update break a part? S80

I just had a software update for the ETM (electronic throttle module) regarding lack of power on hard acceleration. 3 days later, I start to randomly lose the throttle; the throttle doesnt respond to my foot, I need to stop the car and restart it for it to work again. Happens every other day. Volvo dealer plugs Vadis in and tells me I need a new throttle module (internal fault)

Is it possible that the download could have either broken the unit or de-programmed it?

700$ canadian for the part... HELP!
