engine replacement?

Jim's correct and it's very unusual that you needed an enine and turbo at 40K miles. I saw a similar problem a while back on another XC but it had 65K miles and the owner admitted to rarely ever changing engine oil. Both the turbo and engines failure was caused by oil starvation, engine was "gunked up" badly from accumulated sludge as a result of poor maintenance. The customer had VIP extended warranty but the inspector came out, took one look under the oil fill cap and said "nope, no maintenance, probably won't be covered" (wasn't his call). That car was at the dealership for about a month too and that customer also had to pay for the rental, his bill topped $10K.
The moral of the story......CHANGE OIL and FILTER more often, like every 3K miles, 3 months with petroleum oils (see fine print regarding oil changes, not really EVER 7,500 or longer with petroleum based oils).
