Ken,
I don't know which year of 850 you're talking about, but I also read consumer reports as well and find that at least one 850, the 97, is recommended. That is the one I chose. Consumer reports also states that they don't like the 850 because of the stiff suspension, but I see them talking about stiff suspensions on other cars with no mention of not liking the car. Maybe it is simply a taste issue where they might leave something to be desired.
I owned a 94 base model previous to that one which ran great--no problems, but it was a 5 spd and I was tired of driving sticks. I sold the 94 at 36,000 miles to buy the 97 850-R new for the reason of the automatic and the turbo. To this day at 70,000 miles, it runs very well, has no problems, and I do have all maintenance records. I have also owned Pontiacs which were junk and a Mazda which is one of the best vehicles I've owned.
Bottom line: This web site is devoted to people who wish to know if someone can solve a problem they might have with their car. I am amazed at the number of people who belittle this car.
It all depends on how well you treat your car. Any car company can sell a lemon. And there are people cheazy enough out there to buy a new car, beat the crap out of it and then complain to the dealer that the car is a piece of junk.
Ken, again I am not trying to belittle your comment, but I simply find no merit in others trying to slam a good vehicle when that is not what this site is for.
regards
Rick
