running the engine cold: what could THAT do? 850 1995

what bad things can happen from running an engine cold (about 1/3 of normal opting temp on the dash gauge, with noticeable drivetrain roughness and sluggishness)in subzero emps for about 3 months/ 3000 miles? A thermostat replacement last week made a world of performance difference (forgot that the car ever ran this well) and revealed just how long the frog sat in the slowly boiling pot of water...
