Neutral safety Switch 850

What is a neuteral safety switch? my local mechanic read a code ( check engine light was on)that indicated this switch was faulty. He could not explain what it does, but said it would cost $300 to $400 to replace. also said the part is only available thru volvo. Can you drive the car without this repair?.. The car is my wife's 95 850 wagon - apparently the check engine light has been on for some time.
