Luggage cover retainer V70-XC70

I cannot remove the plastic luggage cover holder in my `98 XC. It would appear to have been fitted as an optional extra. Does anyone know if it is designed to be removed and, if so, what I am doing wrong. Believe me, I have spent hours over the weekend trying to remove it. Neither me nor my father can suss it. Heaven forbid I`ve bought an estate car with the carrying capacity of a saloon!!!
