Coolant smell in cabin, is it a leaky heater core? price procedure in Haynes? 850 1995

Anybody experienced this sweet smell from their vents? I have pulled back carpeting near center console towards heater core but see no leak, residue stains. Very strong smell at start up and when heater controls turned to heat. Smell fades away as car warms up, or heater controls turned to cool. Turn off car, on restart even when hot smell is right back in vent.
