What should I do and not do to my 2002 AWD? V70-XC70 2002

Hello,
First of all I would like to say this is a wonderful site. It has some of the best information. This is a great community.
Second, I could use a little advice. I've read alot of the postings about the AWD models and problems with the transmission and bevel gear. Now I am scared to even put the spare tire on. What should I do if a tire goes flat halfway from Pennsylvania to Texas? What are some of the things I can do to increase the life of the AWD system? I've seen people recommend transmission flushes every 20,000 and rotating tires every 5,000. Does this sound right or is not necessary.

Thanks in advance for the advice.
Joshua Richardson
