wagon lift gate shocks in cold 850

Anybody had experience with improving wagon lift gate shocks performance in cold weather? Will simply replacing them do the trick?

My '95 wagon has gas shocks that don't hold the gate open below -10 Celsius. Just the other day the gate came crashing down on my wife as she reached into the car after opening it. It bounced her right into the car and pinched her legs. I laughed but she didn't see the humour. Can you help us hold open the gate to save our marriage?
