Waterpumps rarely fail on these engines (it does happen, but
not nearly as often as the thermostat failing).

I'd replace the thermostat. If the cap of your resevoir is gray I'd
also get the newer blue colored one. The older gray ones are known
to crack which could keep the system from pressurizing (I guess
that wouild lead to boil over, too).
