Power steering rack leak 850

Hi, all. I've been getting a grinding noise from my 97 850 upon hard left turns, usually when the car is cold. I did some research through the archives, and the most common cure for this problem seems to be lubricating the steering stops.

I took the car to a mechanic to get it diagnosed, and he said the power steering rack is beginning to leak. (Specifically: sector shaft leak.) The mechanic quoted approximately $900 to fix the problem, including alignment.

I'm not going to get this fixed right now, and will probably get a second opinion from another mechanic. In the meantime, has anyone else had this problem? Any thoughts as to how long I can go before I need to deal with the problem? Would it be wise to have the steering stops lubricated & see if the noise goes away?

Thanks!
