Check Engine Message/Oil Warning Light - Car won't start S80 1999

I have a 1999 S80 T6, which was originally purchased through the tourist/diplomat program. We purchased it used in Oct. 2000. After a day of errands, the car failed to start, making a whirring/clicking noise, and the "check engine" and oil warning light messages came on and stayed on. The car is overdue for an oil change, and the dipstick showed low oil levels. Adding oil did not cause the oil warning light to go off, and the car still would not start.

Has anyone had a similar problem, and I am just being naive that the oil warning light has something to do with the car not starting? The car gave no warning that there was any problem at all. Is this a sensor/computer issue, and might disconnecting the battery in an attempt to reset the computer fix the problem?

Any advice, suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated.
