transmission failure S80 1999

I am an owner of a 1999 Volvo S80 2.9 and was just told today that my transmission needed to be replaced for $3000. The dealer has performed all the service and there was never a warning sign. The car has 80,000 miles and really has not had any other problems.

any suggestions or experience in this regard would be appreciated...quickly.
