fewer 850 problems after '94? 850

As for FWDs, perhaps '96, '97 were the "best years" BUT any year 850 is preferable to a newer S or V70 IMO, especially '98s. After that, the "check engine" light will become your new "friend" ;)

Now.....you can't beat a 940 for overall lack of real problems. I repair FWDs daily (RWDs too but their #s are declining) yet I own RWDs. As long as I can still buy a good RWD Volvo like a 940, that'll be my choice.
The best FWD Volvo is costlier to keep up/maintain and almost any older RWD excluding 960s (not my favorite).
