850: temporary oil leak after driving through water? 850

My son's 1995 NA 850 all-of-a-sudden dropped a saucer-sized puddle of oil on the garage floor. In the past it has not leaked a drop. It seemed to be coming from the vicinity of the transmission/engine junction - there was oil covering that whole area. So I'm thinking "uh oh, rear main seal". But I cleaned the oil from the engine and lo and behold after a couple days there's no more leak: nothing on the floor, bottom of engine is dry.

What would cause this one-time leak? The one clue I have is, he said he drove through some "deep water" the day before I noticed the puddle. Could there be a link between driving through a deep puddle and dropping oil on the ground?

Curious,

Terry
