O2sensor replaced; check engine still on 850 1996

I replaced my front O2 sensor today with a universal one made by Bosch...the connection kit made the splice easy. I am a bit alarmed that the check engine light still has not cleared. My friends tell me that it may take a few start cycles for this to take place. Is this true? If not, does anyone know what checks can be done to make sure that the sensor is good. Thanks!
