first Hot day in NE and I had to turn the heat on ...temp need went almost red..help 850 1995

driving home on the highway ..i see the temp needle going up almost to the red zone..i turned the heat on to bring the temp needle down..got home and checked the coolant and it was full

not sure what happened..can anyone give me some things to look at.(thermostat, cooling fan ??)

Couple of months ago I notice that the cooling fan was not always working..but i noticed after I got(sweating) that fan was working but did not sound normal.

if it is the Thermostat..can that be replace at home without draining the coolant

thanks
