mass air sensor question 850

I am still trying to solve a problem with my 1993 850 glt. What I thought to be a tranny problem now seems to be something else. While I was draining the fluid, the engine had a hard time running which got worse until it was not starting every time. I checked the exhaust but there is flow through it (although I am not sure what the actual flow rate would be) and I had no bad codes.
I replaced the fuel filter & plugs & the cap seems to be o.k. but now I get a 1-2-1 (mass air sensor reading. Will this cause the engine to die after several (approx. 10) seconds of normal running?
Thanks for any info.
