wiring harness 850

I've replaced bad wiring harnesses in old, high mileage 700s, 200s but NEVER an 850 SO I'd get a second opinion. The older cars had problems where all of the plastic would fall off the wires exposing bare wires and creating all sorts of problems. I havent seen that occur with 850s on up so far.
Can they explain to you why the whole harness is bad? I've seen one early 850 with a bad wire near the trans dipstick area where it rubbed through but I was able to re-insulate the one bad wire.
