Door Check Problems V70-XC70

I have an acquaintance who is currently driving her in-law's V70. She complained of a popping sound that occurs when the driver's door is opened or closed. I investigated and this is what I found:

The bracket/pivot that the door check attaches to on the "A" pillar has a couple of welds broken. As a result the bracket flexes back and forth when the door is opened, making the popping sound.

I don't have any direct experience with this model car, although I am very familiar with a similar arrangement on Mercedes. It would appear the only fix is to remove the door and either rivet or attempt to reweld the bracket.

Is there a better (easier) way to approach this? If so I would love to hear it.

Thanks in advance,

Dan
