abs kicking on over bumps?? 850

First, it's not unreasonable that the ABS would do this on severe bumps. If the tires leave the ground in a braking situation, they will lock-up, because the traction has been lost. And the ABS will of course do its thing!

On bad bumps, I would consider this normal. But if you are experiencing it often, you might be due for new struts. Worn out struts will not keep the tires firmly planted on the road surface (i.e. really "bouncy"), and may cause the ABS to activate. The main job of the suspension is to keep the tires on the road; the secondary job of the suspension is to do this as comfortably as possible. (Volvo usually gets criticism for the latter.)
