Thinking of buying an S80 S80

I'd avoid a 1999 or 2000 model like the plague. You can get a great deal on a used 2001 model because the S80 has such poor resale value. Great news if you're looking to buy a used piece however. You can do some serious horse trading because dealers have trouble giving them away.

The worst part is the GM transmission which is improved compared with '99 and '00 models which were defective out of the box, but still a miserably weak transmission. With transmission replacements going for 5-6K a pop, this can be an expensive little defect.

Don't even think about owning this car outside of warranty coverage. Buy a certified used car, and good luck.

As an alternative if you want to avoid the excitement and don't relish a close and abiding relationship with your local Volvo dealer, buy anything that says "Toyota" on the deck lid.
