Vibrating when braking -- and after car has stopped V70-XC70 1998

Here are the salient points of my problem:

1998 V70, about 55k miles

On warm days (70 degrees plus), and after long trips (30 minutes) through traffic, the car vibrates when braking – the vibrations seem to come from the rear.

Vibrations continue for a few seconds even AFTER the car is completely stopped. If put in neutral, the vibrations stop.

Had rear rotors cut. Did not solve problem – though mechanic, before cutting them, did not notice any warping.

Because the vibrations continue even after the car has stopped, my non-dealer mechanic insists that it is not the rotors or brakes but that it might have something to do with the transmission / overdrive.

Any thoughts? Thanks.
