Tire Size 850 1996

I was reading through the Owner's Manual today as I will need to replace my tires soon, and noticed that the manual states that you cannot put chains on the turbo models running all-season tires size 205/55 R16, which is what I have on the car. So I check the inside of the gas cap door and that is the tire size recommended for the vehicle. The manual also states that if you run 205/50 R16 you need "specially designed chains." Any suggestions on this? If I go to a 205/50 R16, isn't that a lower profile tire than the 55's?
