MIL/Lamda/Check Engine Light 850 1994

My '94 850 Turbo has had the MIL/Lamda/Check Engine light on, and the only code that shows up (recurring) is A2 socket, Code 3-1-5 (Evaporative emmisions system problem). I have reset the codes several times and after a few starts, the light comes back on. The car also seems harder to start (cranks more before firing dispite new plugs and plug wires). I have replaced the activated charcoal in the evap cannister, carefully checked all the tubing, elbows and fittings searching the system for vacuum leaks, checked the gasket on the gas cap, and SEEM to have the concern narrowed down to the evap purge control solenoid valve. The cost is over $200 (Can) which is a little rich to just replace and hope for the best. Does anyone else have experience replacing this component? Is this a common problem? Is there any way to test my valve before I replace it? Are there other things I should be looking for that could set off this code? Advice is greatly appreciated.
