94 850 Turbo - Won't easily shift into 1st from stop 850 1994

Just bought this car from a friend, knowing that the check engine light was on b/c of knock and oxygen sensors. Was planning to have those looked into, but needed to spend $ on having power drivers seat fixed (common problem I've just read...) They also fixed a seal on the turbo leaking oil and a leaking coolant tube. Now, when take foot off brake, car won't always go forward, until I give a bunch of gas and then it jumps forward. Is this most definitely a transmission problem? Didn't like where I had the other repairs done, and want to find someone else if I'm getting into something major.
Thanks
