Did I find a free (but small) performance enhancement, or am I screwing up the wife's car?

THis is the first Volvo I've ever owwned, it's a 99 s70 T5. Cool car. I've been playing around with it, getting ready to service it myself. As I was changing the air filter, I noticed the intake tubing for the air as it goes into the filter box, and followed it up towards the grill, where it takes in fresh air. So then I notice this little black plastic 'dam' looking thing held in by one torx head screw, that covered the opening to the intake tube. I thought, 'gee, taking this off should let it get a little more fresh air, easier, thus, a little (tiny) bit more performance.' Sounds logical. I know these baffles or dams are put inside some cars' intakes for noise reduction... is that the case here?
