In the 70-class Volvos, you'd be talking about a strut tower brace. This unit ties the two front strut towers together under the hood, to prevent front end yaw (understeer) on turns. It works, but the ride gets stiffer and some have complained that the more rigid ones (like IPD's) create new squeaks and creaks from the dash. Fewer complaints, so I'm told, with the Volvo OEM brace which retails for about $150 - less than IPD's.

For RWD Volvos there was also had a crossmember that tied the lower half of the front end. But the FWD Volvo engines are mounted on a fairly substantial subframe, so the lower piece isn't needed (or available?).
