Having BIG problems removing my Auto Gear Selector 850

Ok guys, help me out. I'm still trying to remove my gear selector/shifter knob to replace it w/ a new one. However, I can't get the bloody thing off. I'm told it "pulls straight out" however - it doesn't. I pulled pretty hard, w/ all my might and nothing came off. It does move a tiny bit up and down, I'd say like about a mm or two but thats all. I almost broke the button off in the process because I tried opening it up. Anyway, how do I get the gear selector off - does anyone have any PERSONAL experience doing this? Please help! =o)
