Flame Trap does a 850 really need one????

HI
I was having major problems with rough idle and putt putting of my engine. I cleaned out the throttle body and the flame trap was caked with oil and crap. I took it out and cleaned the socket which it fits into. The car dives smoothly and has alot more power. I know some poeple have taken it out and it has been okay. Should I do the same? any advice would be great.
