Auto Trans repair mechanic? 850 1995

I have a 1995 854 GLT that I am pretty sure needs to be re-built. Just wondering if anyone can suggest an alternative to the Volvo dealer and their $2300-$2600 price tag? I know that the Volvo dealer re-build comes with a 12 month warranty but I thought that there must be a more reasonable way to fix the problem. I am in S.E. Pennsylvania and have already visited a reliable Indy trans repair guy who has been in business for 30 years. I have been to him twice already and both times he tells me he can't get the problem to appear. Of course as soon as I drive it home, it appears. I think he just doesn't want to touch this transmission with a 20 ft. pole. Can anyone recommend an Indy trans mechanic who will actually rebuild what I need along the East coast? I would travel down as far as Maryland or up to N.Y.
