Traction Control Question for newbie 850

I have a '96 855R. 75k miles. Overall, a nice car and everything works.

I have scoured the owner's manual as well as several websites looking for more information on the Traction Control System on these cars.

Under normal operation, my TRAC light is off. If I reach up and hold the toggle for the TRACS system, the light will come on, but when I let go of the momentary toggle, the light goes off. No matter how long I hold the toggle, the light will never stay on, leading me to believe that I cannot for some reason defeat the traction control, which would be nice in some situations.

Anyone have any idea whether my situation is normal and, if not, what can I do to repair it?
