RUNNING OUT OF GAS

i also ran out of gas this afternoon, and come to find out my trip computer said i had 40 miles remaining until empty. any others finding this common? and nwo that i did run out of gas, the Check Engine light came on. will this remain on? or will it turn itself off? please help,
