Power Steering Pump V70-XC70 1999

Just this Sunday returning from a trip, our 1999 X/C developed a whining noise when turning the steering wheel. The car has 50K miles and is of course just out of warranty. Upon bringing the car into the local dealer for diagnosis, I was initially told that that noise is indicative of a problem with the power steering. They later called back and said that since the power steering fluid levels are OK that the problem is in the power steering pump, which will cost $836 to replace. Any comments on this: Is the dealer right? Is this a typical problem for these V70 cars and will we have to do this again at a 100K miles? (I am little concerned that the vehicle is going to turn into a money pit in the next 50K miles.) Thanks for any help you can offer!!
