Volvo 850 (non turbo) cuts out in rain 850 1994

My 94 Volvo 850 non turbo has developed a problem over the past several years. This only occurs when it is raining and seems worse if you drive through a rain puddle and water is directed up into the wheel wells. In fact it has reached the point where I won't take it out in the rain.

The engine suddenly stops and all the dash lights come on. Naturally the power steering fails and the car is hard to steer. After a few moments, you can restart the car. Again this only happens when it is raining an water is splashing up under the wheel wells and the engine compartment.

My first inclination was to assume some bare wiring shorting out when it gets wet but then I found two archive posts on the internet that seem to describe the exact same problem, down to the year and model. (copies of posts below)

Unfortunately the answers to those posts seemed to be unrelated. But the fact that others are having the exact same problem tells me that this is a systematic issue with the 850 model.

I hope I’m telling a familiar story and someone has the solution straight away. Otherwise, the car runs like a top. The water is clearly causing the problem.

Your help is most appreciated and I look forward to hearing from you.

Reference Post 1

I was wondering if you can please give me some ideas. I have a Volvo
850, 1994, 75,000 mile, that I service regularly with oil change and e.t.c. Since the last two years I have been experiencing the car suddenly stalling with all the lights (engine, oil, battery etc) coming up. The car suddenly dies and feels heavy and uncontrollable. I can however start it again in a few minutes

For 4 years our 850 non-turbo wagon has had it's ignition cut out and all the warning lights come on the dash maybe 5 or 6 times. It starts right up immediately fine. It has happened very intermittently, in cold weather and hot, during warm up and after driving a while. Once I checked the codes and it indicated intermittent cam position sensor failure. But the guy at my local Volvo dealer said he had NEVER sold one, so I left it alone.

But recently I was driving in heavy rain and the engine cut out several times. What was odd was that twice the warning lights came on but the engine did not die. In other cases, the engine died too. Again, it started up again fine. There were no error codes after this most recent episode.
