Difficult to replace ABS control unit myself? Other ABS questions, please help! 850 1996

To take off on an earlier theme of mine,
the ABS control unit is assumed to be dead
in a 96 850R that I will likely be purchasing in
a couple days. I have done numerous technical
jobs on the BMW (such as moderate engine work
and other decent multi-day jobs), so it's not a lack of
experience overall but rather a lack of experience with volvos that makes me wonder if it's easy enough to replace it on my own. Where the heck is this thing and is it accessible/removable without extreme hassle? (I would consider something like removal of an instrument cluster or stereo to be a moderate hassle). By the way, if I buy an ABS CU out of a junk car, i'm pretty much risking that it will fail again, correct? Is it age, mileage, or what, that causes the computers to fail? Do they ALL fail? I heard something like every 50,000 miles they die. Also, if I get a new ABS CU and plug it in, will it all just work okay or do I need to bring it to the dealer and have them "reset" it or anything?

thanks to all,

Tim
