To Flush or Not to Flush 850 1993

So, I am a neophyte when it comes to cars except for changing a tire. I have been reading about problems with transmissions when they are not flushed on a regular basis (below post). Is this something specific to automatic models or do manual transmissions have the same problem? What is the cost to have it flushed and how often should it be done? I suppose there is no way to tell if it HAS been done on a regular basis if service records are not available? I guess I also don't understand why this just isn't done on a regular basis when serviced if it can be so expensive to fix if not done.

I have also read on this site that there are problems with the air conditioning evaporator. I never, ever, use the air conditioner so should I even worry about it?

Thanks in advance for your time. . .
