Start up noise for about 90 seconds (45k): oil pump? V70-XC70 1998

On cold starts (car not running for 2 hours +) there is a low pitched "greaseless bearing" type noise coming from t-belt area. Noise is present for about 90 seconds after start up, grows in pitch with rpm's and makes a elevated pitch exit as a last comment. Does not return until next cold start. Had volvo specific mechanics listen; they replaced t-belt tensioner pulley & t-belt. Did not fix. Next they noticed t-belt taught after engine off but slack after 2 hours sitting . Replaced t-belt tensioner ram (holds pressure on t-belt) but noise still present. No other symptoms to reference. Phoenix Volvo dealer chased similar noise on 98 XC with 40k+ for 30 days until finally found metallic scraping noise (not sure if that's same) coming from oil pump. Replaced, noise gone. Dealer had 3 more 98's come in with similar problem.

Help! I'm tired of paying for repairs not needed. My mechanic will split labor on oil pump - just don't want to if I don't have to.
