I have yet to recommend a Volvo to the unitiated, except for my psychopathic ex-boss in Chicago to whom I recommended the XC. (Unfortunately, he didn't buy it.)
I now have 120,000 miles and my car uses no oil, the clutch is original and the transmission shifts like new. That's good! The bad is practically everything that's attached to the engine or transmission has been a problem. I have a stack of receipts so thick that it won't fit into the glove compartment. Since my 100k warranty expired, the three repairs of note have been the themostat, the heater core and a seized brake caliper. maybe about $1300 in repairs over the 20,000 miles. Is that excessive for a premium imported car? I don't know.
When I bought the car in 1998 Consumer Reports recommended it, and there wasn't anything else that even came close in terms of performance, utility and safety. There is now, and it's more reliable and it's cheaper, too. I don't think my Volvo has been any less reliable than my Saabs or the '88 Colony Park that we still have and we bought new, but the cost of maintainance and repairs has been astronomical. Still like the car, it's still a hoot to drive, but the reliability and durability and cost has been disappointing.
