a/c problems v70 xc awd V70-XC70 2000

my ac works when turned on, for a while. after abiut 5 min. maybe less when its really hot the compressor disengages and the ac stops cooling. you can turn off the ac or leave it on and the problem will correct it self, only to do the same thing over and over again. my mec. at the shop said the compressor is bad and needs replacing. he wants 900.00 just for the compressor!!!!!
