Cooling Problem S80 2000

I have a sporadic problem of overheating to the point where the message center warns me to turn off engine. It happened last September in 90F weather and again last week. Both times with A/C on, driving city streets. Other times the temperature needle always points straight up, where it should be when warmed up. I do also notice that when parked after a driving a few miles, the fan comes on after the engine is turned off (as it is designed to do) but it keeps stopping and starting. Help appreciated, warrenty expires next month.
